For the first time since June 2025, renting has become cheaper than buying across much of the UK — and the South West is seeing some of the biggest gaps.
According to recent Rightmove data, average mortgage payments are now around £299 per month higher than renting in the South West, as elevated interest rates continue to squeeze first-time buyers.
While long-term ownership still appeals to many households, rising mortgage rates are pushing more people to rent for longer especially younger buyers trying to save larger deposits while managing higher monthly costs.
